  • Chinese officials are requiring all clerics and religious in the Shanghai diocese to undergo “re-education” programs, in a continuing crackdown on Catholics following the public resignation of Bishop Thaddeus Ma Daqin from the government-backed Patriotic Association.
  • Bishop Ma, who was ordained in July as a Shanghai auxiliary, announced during the ordination ceremony that he was leaving the Patriotic Association. He was immediately placed under house arrest. Soon thereafter, authorities closed down the Shanghai seminary.
